April Program: The Sculptural Artwork of Raul Acero

Tuesday Evening, April 22, 2014 @7:00 PM

RAA photo Raul (1)Noted sculptor and ceramic artist, Raul Acero, will be the guest artist, at the Redlands Art Association Gallery.  He will be speaking on and projecting images of his work; “The Sculptural Artwork of Raul Acero.”  It should be a captivating and inspirational experience, seeing and hearing about his sculptures that are often monumental in size.  Raul is greatly interested in the art of people from different cultures and times.  His work reflects this interest, as it expresses the inner life of people and their spiritual experiences.   Raul says, “I am drawn to ancient art and often to the figure, which I abstract and interpret to my own expression.  I see the purposes in my work as having to do with the central mysteries of life, love, death, and the unknown, inexplicable world of the spirit.”

Raul was born in Begota, Colombia, but grew up in New York City.  He has an MFA from Ohio University and has taught and developed ceramic programs at several colleges and universities.  Currently, he is a Professor at the University of Redlands.  His work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and is in many private collections and permanent collections, including The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Asheville Museum of Art..  He has created numerous commissioned pieces, including one at the University of Redlands and one for the corporate building of Prudential Life Insurance, in Princeton, New Jersey.  Also, he is the author of the book, “Making Ceramic Sculpture.”  His work can be seen on his website www. raulacero.net
