3/22 Program: in Plein Air

Northern California: Painting Paradise in Plein Air during the Late 19th Century and Early 20th Century

by Professor Linda Kay Zoeckler

A distinguished art historian, Professor Linda Kay Zoeckler is coming to RAA to tell about the early Northern California plein air artists who created wonderful paintings that come with absolutely captivating stories.  The paintings are so very different from the early Southern California artworks, that Zoeckler told about in a fascinating program in 2014.  She will discuss factors such as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fires, the Gold Rush, the Indians, as well as different weather/ light conditions that contribute to the artworks being so unlike those of the early Southern California artists.  While discussing the artworks and the amazing stories of those courageous and productive artists, she will be showing about 200 visual images of the plein air landscape paintings.  If you have a passion for art and how historical events affect the arts, you won’t want to miss this program!
