Spring Cleaning: Artist Bios

We’ve welcomed April Showers and I’d still welcome new or spring cleaned  “artist bio” for those of us who don’t have one or who have not up dated the one in the book recently. If you’ve never written one before now’s the time to write one.

The format 2 separate pages: page 1 brief bio about yourself and your work, contact details such as your website and email address, and a small photograph of yourself. Page 2: 3 photo examples of your work, with your name and website/gmail at the bottom of the page. Customer’s regularly ask about the artist who made the piece of work they are buying, so if you have business cards put a few of them with your bio and I will put them in the bio book as well. You can drop off your bio at the next take in or email it to me bizzilizzi7@gmail.com and I’ll print it and put it in the book for you.

Many thanks to the people who submitted new bio’s last month they are already in the book.

Thanks Liz Coviello, Historian in the cupboard

Redlands From A to Z

The book, Redlands From A to Z, was developed by Judith Sparhawk, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the City of Redlands.  It features photographs of selected iconic views of Redlands, each chosen to represent the letters of the alphabet.  Each place includes a brief summary of that place in Redlands’ history.  All photographs and text are by Judith Sparhawk, who has been photographing Redlands for many years.  This book provides a compilation of many of her beautiful photographs.  It will be for sale in the RAA Gallery, late April and retails for $49.00.

6th Annual Evening with the Artists

And the Evolution of Art Program at RCH: Care and Healing of the Soul*

On Friday, April 25th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm Redlands Community Hospital Foundation and Art Committee will host the 6th Annual Evening with the Artists at the Weisser Education Pavilion on the RCH campus. This year’s featured artists will be Martha Cowan, Ray Fedorchak, Angela Koenig, Seung Lee, and Aida Schneider. The Evening with the Artists is an evening of art, friends and fundraising to support the art program at Redlands Community Hospital. Over the last five years this event has sold over $63,000 of original art, with 2013 being the most successful evening boasting $20,870 in sales. A total of 193 pieces have been purchased with again 2013 the high water mark of 57 pieces sold. The RCHF Art Program has benefited with $16,216 of the net proceeds. Participating artists also donate a piece of art which best represents their work to be included in the hospital’s collection. To date more than 37 pieces of original artwork have been acquired. The success of this event not only supports maintenance and acquisitions for the art collection but it also serves to support the mission of creating a healing environment as well as elevating the appreciation and profile of local artists in our community.

Art by Aida Schneider

At Redlands Community Hospital the mission is to promote an environment in which patients receive high quality healthcare so they can maintain their health or be restored to good health. Part of that environment of care happens subconsciously every day in the hallways of the hospital. The blending of the visual and healing arts has evolved into one of the finest and largest collections of original art in the area. The public spaces of the Redlands Community Hospital are adorned with more than 750 pieces of original artwork that brighten the spirits and soften the mood of the typical hospital environment. The paintings reach out to those passing by offering comfort, consolation, inspiration, encouragement, joy and tranquility. RCH subscribes to the well-known medical belief that pleasant surroundings promote well-being and beautiful art can contribute to the calming influence.

The collection has grown substantially over the years and is maintained by the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation Art Committee.  The inspiration for the collection lies in the vision and dedication of Marianne Finlay. Finlay (then Marianne Johnson) began working at the hospital in 1938 as a receptionist. She created a welcoming atmosphere in the lobby and as the hospital grew and added wings, she rallied the support of Dr. Kenneth Ghormley and administrator George DeLange to officially start the RCH Art Program in 1978. Over the next 20 years Finlay inspired acclaimed local artists to support the burgeoning program through art donations or selling their original work at below-market prices. Early supporters include Swen Larson and Vern Dornbach. Finlay worked closely with artists Phil Dike, Fred Gowland, Ken Hanson, Worden Bethel, Brad Faegre, Sheila Hansberger, George Riday, Ben Rabe, Jeff Owens, Janet Edwards, Jim Fallows, Don O’Neill, Joanna Mersereau, Jean Cranmer, and many other artists.

The first event supporting the growth of the collection was known as Art Affair. This fundraiser began in the mid-1980s and continued through the mid-1990s. The event went on hiatus for several years and then was reinvented by current RCH Foundation Art Committee members as the Evening with the Artists. This event is in its 6th year and has successfully created a gathering of art lovers that come together each spring for an evening to meet with a select group of artists, to acquire art for their collections and to support the program. The event is held in the Stan and Ellen Weisser Education Pavilion on the RCH campus at 350 Terracina Blvd. Admission is $20. A percentage of the gross sales go to the art committee’s work. The pieces donated to the hospital by the participating artists are added to the hospital’s art collection. All proceeds from the event are used by the Foundation’s Art Committee to maintain and grow the collection.  The Art Committee is made up of Foundation Board members and select community members.
