Art-In-The-Park

RAA’s Art-in-the-Park Show has been invited to participate in the Redlands Art Festival, May 25 & 26 (Memorial Day weekend). The Festival will also conduct a juried art show- selected artist will purchase booth space for sales and offer their art to be judged for prizes. In addition to the visual arts, Redlands Art Festival will bring together the performing arts – The Redlands Shakespeare Festival, Redlands Theatre Festival and Lifehouse Theater- and music performances from local musicians. RAA wants to be a part of the Festival, so we have moved our Art-in-the-Park off Mother’s Day weekend to Memorial Day weekend.

The RAA Take In Crew Needs Your Help

The day time crew is fully staffed and working well. HOWEVER, THE EVENING CREW is in desperate need of one more member. As you know, this crew works from 4:00 to 7:00. Many of our members rely on being able to bring in their art at this time and we certainly want to continue to provide them with the opportunity. PLEASE CONSIDER being a member of the EVENING CREW. We need YOU!

“Off the Shelf” by Joanna Mersereau, A.W.S.

This column will review books in the RAA library that I consider valuable art tools. In reading them I found my own imagination was stimulated. I hope it does the same for you.

“Abstraction in Art and Nature” 759.06Ha1, by Nathan Cabot Hale

This is a 300-page VERY comprehensive book which draws parallels between art and nature with photo and drawn illustrations.

The author does an in-depth analysis of the common “line” and what forms it take in art and nature. Ex. Straight line, spinning wave, circle, spiral, y- and x-forms. These may become more complex, becoming 2- and 3-dimensional forms (snowflakes, galaxies, etc.)

The differences among form (simple line), shape (more complex) and mass (3-dimensional) is discussed, again with illustrations. All these again are tools in the artist’s hand. Joseph Albers took the grid concept and translated it into his unique vision. The other concepts are also illustrated, both in photo and in art.

Clouds, surf, a single water splash, smoke, cosmic nebula, rocks, flowers—all are related forms in nature. The value to the artist is that understanding the natural forms is that the basic abstract concept can be translated into new art patterns.

The last half of the book is the one that is most interesting to me: Patterns. Unfortunately, time became short and I was unable to read it before the submission deadline. I want to cover it as thoroughly as the first half. So, the next column will deal with Patterns.

Meanwhile the current books last reviewed will still be available in the gallery. Look for the easel next to the jewelry cases on the right as you come into RAA. You will see “Drawing in Ink” and “Painting Trees” (unless they’ve been checked out.)

Request for Donations

My name is Mary Weise, and I am an Alumni Member of the Alpha Sigma Pi sorority at the University of Redlands. Throughout my time at the University, I had the opportunity to get to know many of the members of the Redlands Art Association, and even had the opportunity to work with your organization (I built your website, with Candy Glendening). I have always admired the work that you do, and the creations of your members, and always take opportunities to share it with those that I think will enjoy it as well.

In that light, I would like to extend a request from my sorority. We are hosting our annual Birthday Luncheon in April, in Mentone. During each luncheon, we hold an opportunity drawing to support our Alpha Sigma Pi Golden Gift / Hazel MacNair Steiner Endowed Scholarship, which helps some of our members to offset the rising costs of their education. We would like to give you an opportunity to showcase your creations to the 100+ sisters who attend annually, through a donation of an item or gift certificate for our drawing.

I feel that this is a great opportunity for our organizations to work together, and to showcase some of Redlands best and most talented artists. All donations are tax deductible. The official letter from our Luncheon Chair can be downloaded here: RAA Donor Letter, for your information as well. This includes our Tax ID and information on where to send donations. Please contact me if you have any questions, and I greatly appreciate your consideration.

Thank You!

Mary Weise
