Jan Harvey is a printmaker whose primary medium is photo etching. This show focuses on photos she made between 1968 and 1974 of the historic buildings which were demolished to make room for the Redlands Mall.  

Jan Harvey was born in Riverside CA and moved to Redlands CA on her seventeenth birthday. She married and raised her daughter and son in Redlands before moving with her husband to Yucaipa CA where they built their forever home, a geodesic dome, with help from family and a few friends.

She began to study photography at Valley College in 1968 where she worked as a photographer/journalist on the college newspaper. When she learned that the photography department at Crafton Hills College was slated to close, she enrolled there for a different perspective. Photography held it’s fascination for her, but she felt compelled to stretch the photograph further. A chance meeting with an artist at an exhibit introduced her to photo etching and from there to printmaking in general. It was then that she began an overview study of printmaking. Etching was a natural fit, using her own photographs as the starting point.

From those first classes at CHC, she began to study with world renowned printmaker Dan Welden. Dan was the artist who developed the Solarplate, an etching plate that develops and etches in water. After working with the traditional plate making materials including harsh photo chemicals and acids, Jan’s focus changed to the healthier product and it is what she generally uses in her own work and teaches in workshops that she holds in her studio. She has also taught and demonstrated the etching technique at various venues including Riverside Art Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum and Art Methods and Materials Show in Pasadena.

Jan has participated in individual and group juried shows throughout Southern California, including at Riverside Art Museum, Ink and Clay Exhibition at Cal Poly Pomona, La Quinta Art Festival, Chaffey Community Museum of Art, EOS Gallery in Redlands, Art for Heavens Sake, Artistic License Fair, Collage, Riverside Community Art Association, Many college art galleries in So CA, Redlands Art Association, Restaurants such as Omnipane, Stell’s and Daily Grind Coffee Houses, in Fallbrook at the Fallbrook Art Center and Fallbrook Library and others. Her work is part of collections around the US, Switzerland and Japan including MOR, the Museum of Redlands.

The artist continues to explore new methods and combinations to challenge her creativity.
