Art Majerus began his photography and art career in 1968 when he received his first professional 35mm camera. In the early years it was just fun and learning while developing an eye and style. In 1972 he built his first darkroom which opened a whole new world of photography. Through the years he dabbled in weddings, portraits along with wildlife and landscapes. Eventually he decided his real passion was wildlife and landscape.
In the late 1990’s he took an abrupt turn and started making things on the wood lathe and soon went on the road doing art shows around the country. For the next 27 years he traveled to 20–30 cities per year displaying his work alternating between wood turning and photography. By late 2019 he abandoned the woodturning and shows to work full time as a photographer. His focus remains on wildlife and landscape.
Unlike most photographers today Art still enjoys shooting with film cameras and uses both large format 4X5 view cameras and medium format cameras. Of course, in today’s world his primary cameras are the latest mirrorless models. He still travels extensively but instead of traveling to shows he is now able to spend more time in the National Parks and other wonderful places trying to make interesting images.
Currently, in addition to showing in the beautiful Redlands Gallery, he displays his work in the Hemet Valley Art Association Gallery where he is the volunteer director and photography instructor. He hopes to continue making unique images for many more years.
